cult-of-the.jpg   It’s quite ironic.  I was told to read Andrew Keen’s The Cult of the Amateur yesterday for work.  My last big story series before starting AA2.0 is on citizen journalism and emerging technologies surrounding the industry.

Well, I feel that Keen may have some interesting points.  He is skeptical of web 2.0 because he feels that only through the sheer volume of one’s voice can one break through the rest of the crowd.  Meaning, if you have 34 million bloggers out there that consider themselves reporters, it’s practically immpossible to break through the static.  Not too mention, a great deal of these citizen journalists have no formal training in reporting or fact checking, therefore, making their rants baseless and sloppy.  He seems to be turned off by the unformal nature of it all.  Understandable.

I get it.  Right or wrong, he has a point.  It reminds me of a metaphor I heard recently.  My boss referred to the communal culture of the web 2.0 industry as an overloaded stage full of actors.  All these actors are waving their arms and jumping left and right, doing anything to entertain the audience.  However, the problem is that the chairs in the theater are all empty.  The audience has vanished.

The individuals that used to fill these seats have since become entertainers themselves and are now on stage waving their arms and jumping left and right along side everyone else.

Things are shaping up – spent Friday relaxing, Saturday was spent arranging a few details for the project, Saturday night was spent sleeping in dirt along side a campfire in Pennsylvania, and all of Sunday was spent writing and designing information for the trip.  Above is a picture of a map that will be chopped up and used as a banner for the site.

Well, the designs are completely done for the website.  All looks good.  The developer now has everything and we should be up and running in no time.  I’ll be shooting along a new video entry as soon as possible.  Things are just a bit crazy right now.  This video blog as short lived and chaotic as it has been will no longer be necessary.

These next two weeks or four weeks rather are going to be insane.  I’m still trying to get a bit more monetary sponsorship, which is looking good.  Shooting the “initial request video” soon.  Trying to score one more monetary sponsor and one sponsor for electronic equipment.  Looking to score a label to work with in order to provide some music to the videos.

Anyway, check out the solidified “About” page.  That is the official “what is he doing” section that will be placed on the website.

One more thing – if anyone has thoughts on a domain name, email me.  I need to purchase one tonight.  Aroundamerica.com is taken, but Aroundamerica.tv is open.  Are we far enough along in online video content to be confident about a “.tv” domain?

*Note – Since I initially published this post a few months ago, I have since purchased and am now running www.aroundamericaproject.com.  The blog that you are reading has since become more or less defunct, but still appears first when you Google my name and sometimes the project name.  Darn Google algorithms.  Anyway, go to the other site now!  It’ll be fun, I promise.

I videotaped my day last Friday and half of Saturday.  Check it out!  May not the most interesting video, but the concept of doing it is the intriguing part, right?

And, thanks to Amory for the song!  www.myspace.com/amory

What do you want first, the good news or the bad news?

The good news is the project is going far better and more organized than I anticipated.  I have been meeting with people practically every day and night to discuss plans for the site, trip, and videos.  I think this thing may have potential.  In fact, I just found my “base” person tonight – the person who will keep track of where I am and load the videos for me.

The bad news is I have 3 videos to post, but I’ve just been so busy that I can’t find time to transfer them over.  As this pen sitting next to me is my witness, I will post them tomorrow, come Hell or high water.

Thanks for the emails!

I met with Noel of Luckofseven.com tonight in Williamsburg. Such a great guy. His project is quite similar to mine in intent, but not necessarily in scope. I’ll be posting my interview with him tomorrow. Stay tuned!

I’m attempting to tape my entire day in order to get a sense of what it would be like while on the road.  It’s a lot tougher than I initially expected.  My arms are simply physically rejecting the idea of holding 2 pounds of plastic up to my face for long periods of time.  I tried having a pep talk with them earlier, but that doesn’t seem to have worked.  Plus, on top of that, today is one of my least politically correct work days I’ve had.

I’m doing a story on Macy’s.  I went to the store on 34th Street and was chased by their male cologne clerks, while trying to do a composite a story on their homosexual mannequins.  No joke.  It sounds so strange to write that, but that’s what we’re doing a story on – Macy’s homosexual mannequins.   Apparently Macy’s is sponsoring New York’s gay pride parade.  So, in collaboration with the event, they have positioned exquisitely clad male mannequins in effeminate stances on 34th street.  How strange.

All in all, I think I need a new strategy.

Met up with Joshua from Tilzy.tv today at NYC’s infamous Chat and Chew to discuss proper formats for hosting the video.  He had some great input.  Thanks Josh!

I guess Blip.tv it is to host the video.  It’s been decided.

Headed to talk about designs for the site tonight, prepare questions for the next vlogging scholar, then to have a drink and act like I have time for a social life.

Was there a skate comp in Williamsburg today?

Sony’s HDR-HC1

I’m really not even sure how to approach this issue.  I have two things to do today for the project – write sponsors and find a coder.  I’ve come to the harsh realization that I may in fact need a new camera for the trip.

I’ve heard such great things about the Sony’s HC1 pictured above, but I need to do a bit more research.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Other things I will need include an unlimited supply of tapes, a handful of batteries, and a well-equipped Mac.  Hmm.

In terms of coders, I have someone that is designing the official site, but I still need a coder for a site that I plan to be able to launch in 3 weeks.  Busy busy.

Off to the NAA conference.

Click the above picture for a video explanation of the project.  I still feel like the video is a bit more shaky than anticipated.  Quicktime/15 frames per second.  Hmm.  And, what’s this snap.com pop-up business?

By the way, if you like the music in the video, check out the Davey Coal MySpace link to the right.  He’s my musical alter-ego.  Newspaper reporter, musician, aspiring digital vagabond… who needs a social life anyway?

Hello there America.  I apologize that I haven’t posted since last week.  A lot has been happening.  However, 1 wedding, 1 NAA prep conference, 2 states, 8 bars, 100 emails, and 18 family members later, I’m back.

Well, I’ve been trying to figure out the proper format under which to post my first “project explanation.”  I currently have it in quicktime at 15 frames per second, which I assume will suffice.

But, I digress.

I am shocked at the difficulty I had rendering and adding titles to my short video.  I’m using iMovie – what I assume to be relatively easy-to-use video editing software.  However, I could not get the title to come out centered.  Take a look above.  Isn’t that strange?  I could move the cursor up and down the screen, but not sideways.

Secondly, the video’s resolution reminds me of videos of panda bears I used to watch on the Bronx Zoo’s site when I was 11-years-old.  Thoughts anyone?

P.S.  Thanks so much to those that have emailed me thus far.  Those are some great tips!  However, do not hesitate from leaving a comment below.  I am still commentless.  Has the age of the nonMySpace-related comment passed?
